Sep 12, 2024

Vermeer UK is committed to setting the standard for machinery excellence, by consistently exceeding customers’ expectations. We remain loyal to the Vermeer family’s unique culture of exceeding expectations, advancing products and giving back to communities. One of our specialist areas is the underground sector, and we understand the importance of finding the right plow to suit your needs. We’ve created this handy guide to help you choose the right Vermeer Plow for your job, out of our plow options.

If you’d like to learn more about what a utility plow is actually used for, take a look at our comprehensive guide here.

Job-site location and trench size

The size of the job site is a key factor in deciding which plow is right for you. For small jobsites, our Vermeer PTX40 is ideal; it is compact in size, measuring in at 40.2” wide and 55” wide, and is designed with enhanced manoeuvrability in tight spaces. Additionally, it has a variety of traction options for different needs. The 23” option is ideal for narrower or congested sites.  The SPX25 also offers great manoeuvrability in congested and tight jobsites.

Furthermore, the size of trench that is being created can also influence choice of plow. For longer trenches (over 250m) or long runs with multiple trenches, using a ride on option, such as the Vermeer PTX44, can be beneficial.

Terrain and soil type

The type of soil and terrain that you will be plowing is a very important factor to consider when choosing your plow. For dense or rocky soils, using a ride-on can allow the operator to have more control. Walk -behinds, such as the Vermeer PTX40, can also be a good option if the soil is not soft enough to plow pipe into, but the space is not large enough for a ride-on to be used.

The Vermeer RTX550 is a great option if you are unsure about the terrain, because it is equipped for excellent performance across the majority of terrains. Furthermore, it is equipped with TrenchSenseTM electronic control – which is used to travel through difficult ground conditions, when used with the quad track system.

Ease of use and operator comfort

All of the Vermeer plows are designed to be simple-to-use and have the operator in mind. The Vermeer RTX1250i2 is created for a quiet ride, with convenient controls, and an isolated, cushioned operator platform. To further enhance operator comfort, Vermeer offers an all-new optional climate-controlled cab. The PTX44 has conveniently place finger controls that maximise operator comfort and minimise operator reach during long jobs. Furthermore, it provides clear jobsite visibility, as the operator station is located at the centre of the plow. Finally, the PTX40 comes with a remote control for fingertip control and smooth machine handling.

Versatility

Finally, when choosing a plow, you may need to consider other factors, such as value for money. The Vermeer RTX550 is a great plow option because it is suitable for use across a wide range of terrains, but is also available with a wide selection of attachment options, including a trencher, vibratory plow, combos and rockwheel. This variety of attachments means that the RTX550 is suitable for the majority of job applications.

What factors should I consider when selecting a utility plow?

Key factors include the type of utility being installed (e.g., fibre, power, water), expected depth, soil conditions, and terrain. You should also evaluate whether your crew needs compact models for residential use or high-powered options for longer, deeper runs.

What types of plows are best for fibre installation?

Vibratory plows are ideal for fibre because they minimise surface disruption and can pull in cables efficiently in soft to medium soils. Vermeer offers models specifically suited for fibre optic work with precision controls and minimal footprint.

How does soil type affect plow performance?

Soil composition impacts both productivity and wear. Sandy or loamy soils are easier to plow, while rocky or compacted soils may require pre-ripping or more powerful equipment. Always assess ground conditions before selecting your plow.

What maintenance is required for a utility plow?

Regular checks of the blade, vibratory mechanism, hydraulics, and frame are essential. Lubrication and timely replacement of worn wear parts will extend equipment life and improve jobsite performance.

Can a plow be adapted for different cable or pipe sizes?

Yes. Many Vermeer plows offer interchangeable blades, chute sizes, and reel carriers, allowing operators to adjust the machine setup based on the cable or pipe dimensions required.
