Stump grinders are one of our many tree care & recycling products available at Vermeer UK. But with a wide variety of stump grinders available, it can be hard to know which one is best for you. That’s why we’ve created this simple guide to help you pick the stump grinder that is best for your business
The Vermeer SC292 stump grinder ideal for when you need full-sized power in a compact unit. With the duals removed, this unit is only 35” (89cm) wide, and has a height of 52” (132.1 cm).
The SC292 is also equipped with two-speed ground drive, and can be operated at 0-133 fpm for quickly moving the machine or at 0-66 fpm when nearer the stump, giving the operator full control.
Additionally, this stump grinder has a 26.5 hp Kohler engine, which performs well in cold-weather starts, has reduced occurrences of engine flooding, and provides improved fuel economy compared to other carbureted gas engines.
The Vermeer SC362 is designed with tree care contractors and hire companies in mind, offering a compact, high horsepower machine. The 35-horsepower gasoline engine offers low vibrations, smooth starts, an instant return to maximum power and low emissions. Furthermore, this engine comes with a limited 3-year Vanguard warranty. The AutoSweep© Control System which monitors engine speed and automatically adjusts the cutter wheel sweep rate to reduce engine stress also comes as standard.
The SC362 is equipped with the Vermeer-exclusive Yellow JacketTM cutter system, which is specially designed to provide fast and easy serviceability, alongside extended pocket and tooth life.
The Vermeer SC382 is ideal for use in difficult transport conditions. It comes with four-wheel drive as standard, offering traction and manoeuvrability in difficult conditions.
It is equipped with a 37 horsepower Briggs and Stratton Vanguard engine, for power straight to the stump. Alongside this, the SmartSweepTM control system automatically adjusts cutter wheel sweep rate to maximise power to the cutter wheel and reduce engine stress.
The SC382 has a chip blade to reduce the amount of manual work during job site cleaning and simplifies jobsite clean-up by helping to manoeuvre processed material. Additionally, the SC382 has an optimised profile and tooth patter that helps with productivity and chip flow of recirculating material.
The Vermeer SC30TX is designed to be easy to use. Its compact design offers intuitive controls, minimal service points, and still has the performance to get the job done. The operator control handle is an operator presence capacitance-sensing handle in order to protect the operator. Furthermore, the SmartSweepTM control system monitors the load of the engine, while providing continuous feedback. This results in a smooth and consistent cutter wheel sweep rate.
The SC30TX has longer tracks which helps to provide consistent stability, making it easier to load and unload the machine. It also helps to reduce low ground pressure, decreasing the possibility of turf damage. The cutter wheel and ground drive are both hydraulically driven, eliminating the need for belts and chains, which in turn reduces service and maintenance needs.
The Vermeer SC552 is a very powerful stump grinder, with the ability to cut up to 31” above ground and 25” below ground. It has a unique four-bar linkage system that means the cutter wheel can move away from the machine as the boom drops towards the stump, reducing need to reposition the whole unit. Its straight-line cutting dimension allows operators to cut a 6ft stump without repositioning the machine.
Its four-wheel drive and variable speed controls mean the SC552 has enhanced traction in difficult ground conditions, and can be purchased with an optional remote to provide more propel, boom and steering function control. The SC552 also has an auxiliary control station that can be used in narrow conditions.
The Vermeer SC70TX can withstand large stumps in commercial job sites, while also being compact enough to fit into residential areas. Its increased ground drive speed and specially designed track help to decrease any ground disturbances. It is ideal for tough cutting jobs, with productive chipping and a 67 horsepower, tier 5 diesel engine.
Like other models, the SC70TX is available with a remote control, so that the stump cutter can be manoeuvred while the operator is away from the unit.
Our final option, the Vermeer SC48TX provides high efficiency from the engine to the stump grinding wheel, through its 48 horsepower diesel engine with a direct drive system that delivers maximum power to the cutter wheel. This engine helps to provide optimal fuel economy, durability and performance to easily cut stumps of all sizes. It is created with low disturbance tracks which is ideal for adverse ground conditions. The optional remote also means that the operator can have increased visibility of their jobsite. Finally, the SC48TX has an above grade cutting dimension of 28” and a below grade of 16” – meaning it can grind a variety of different stumps.

For smaller landscaping operations, a compact stump grinder with moderate horsepower is a practical choice. It offers enough power to handle typical residential stumps while remaining manoeuvrable and transportable. Larger, higher-capacity machines are often over-spec’d for occasional or small-scale use, leading to higher running and maintenance costs.
Tracked stump grinders provide superior traction, stability on slopes or uneven terrain, and reduced turf disturbance, making them ideal for forestry, park or land-clearing jobs. Wheeled models are generally lighter, quicker to reposition and more suitable for urban or flat sites where surface damage must be minimised.
Features that boost efficiency include a large cutter-wheel with high tooth count, hydraulic depth control, remote or operator-friendly controls, quick access to wear parts and simplified service points. Machines that minimise repositioning time or loading/unloading effort help maximise productivity in commercial work.
Diesel engines typically offer greater torque and durability for heavy duty, high-volume grinding, and are preferred in commercial arboriculture and land-clearing operations. Petrol engines may be sufficient for lighter or occasional tasks.
Cutter-wheel design is critical: more teeth, robust carbide or bolt-on tooth systems, and effective chip ejection mechanisms directly impact how fast stumps are removed and how little downtime is incurred for maintenance. Poor design can slow productivity and increase wear on the machine, so choose a grinder with a well-engineered cutter-wheel.
