140 hp (104 kW) John Deere Tier 3 or Tier 4 Final engine - The 140 hp (104 kW) John Deere offers power for drilling as well as tracking and manoeuvring the drill around the job site.

The Vermeer D40x55 S3 features 40,000 lb (177.9 kN) of thrust/pullback and 5500 ft-lb (7457 Nm) of rotational torque. The D40x55 S3 HDD machine offers a 10% increase in thrust and rotation over its predecessor, the D36x50 Series II, which helps maximise machine and job site productivity.

AutoDrill - This feature offers increased flexibility of the drill during operation.

Carriage speed - increased carriage speeds lead to decreased cycle times, helping contractors install more linear feet per day.

Common control system - The system features a digital display in addition to the DigiTrak® Aurora™ and improved onboard diagnostics. All S3 Navigator drills have a common control platform, benefiting drill operators with the ability to operate a variety of drills and lessening the time needed for training.

Enhanced hydraulic system design - The enhanced hydraulic system helps increase the machine’s efficiency and productivity by better use of engine horsepower.

Excavator-style cab with increased legroom - Operators can drill in greater comfort with the Vermeer D40x55 HDD.

Operator’s station with DigiTrak® Aurora™ screen - The DigiTrak® Aurora™ full-colour touchscreen display delivers real-time, easy-to-view locate information which can help make a driller’s day more productive.

Rod options - Rod option offers greater versatility in adapting the Vermeer D40x55 S3 HDD machine to the specific needs of the contractor’s operations. If the contractor needs enhanced steering ability, the 2.38” (6 cm) is likely to be selected. When the maximum thrust power is needed, the 2.63” (6.7 cm) would be preferred.

Sound reduction - Significant gains in sound reduction make the D40x55 S3 horizontal directional drill particularly suited to working in congested commercial and residential areas as the quieter working environment helps create less neighbourhood disturbance. Operator comfort is also increased, making long hours spent on the drill less fatiguing. Communication between operator and locator is easier.

Tracking power and speed enhancements - An increase in tracking speed coupled with an increase in tracking effort allows the drill to better make sharp turns and climb slopes as compared to its competitors, and offers the opportunity for improved job site productivity as you can get the drill into place faster.
